A PEELING SQUARE - AARON BARKLA
Opening Night - 5 September 6 -8pm
"A Peeling Square." is a series that uses "visual haiku" to convey a story of conflict and degradation. The medium of choice is acrylic paint sheets, where a white square and blue line are used with restraint, either by slicing or cutting them out to create various shapes and sizes. The compositions convey a sense of calm, movement, conflict, degradation, and anthropomorphism. The theme of degradation displays hidden details beneath or within the surfaces. Aaron Barkla, a multidisciplinary designer and artist from New Zealand/Aotearoa, finds inspiration from Sydney's streets. Elements such as road signs, signage, architecture, and bill posters influence his work. Each artwork contains a visual puzzle, prompting viewers to decipher its visual translation into a written sentence. "A Peeling Square" is an exploration of artistic expression that combines various elements to tell a story while challenging viewers to engage in the interpretation of visual and written language.
