The Gomeroi people attacking Major Mitchell
Suzy Evans
Acrylic on Canvas
120 x 165 cm
Suzy Evans is a Gomeroi woman, artist, business owner - living and creating on Gadigal land and a Redfern local. In this painting - based off her 2014 Telstra Award winning work - which was exhibited in the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award held at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. Suzy makes reference to Albert Tucker’s painting of the Gomeroi clan attacking the explorer Major Mitchell (with the parrot’s beak being a metaphor for a spear), and as such, acknowledging Black Resistance which was so often overlooked in the teaching of the history of white settlement.
