Kathleen Matterson

What does colour mean to you?

Colour makes me happy! A vivid blue sky, the complementary colours of blue & orange of the outback, calming ocean views, the intricate colour details of a  butterfly are all mood enhances. You would never see me wearing beige!

What colour are you?

This is a no-brainer for me, blue!

Let’s talk about Purple.

Purple & blues are considered cool colours. However a true purple is a borderline colour, as it’s a mixture of red & blue therefore symbolic of mixed emotions.

Kathleen was raised on a dairy farm at Naughton’s Gap, Northern Rivers

NSW, Australia, and now resides in Botany. Her upbringing has instilled a

deep love and connection to the land and environment. She’s a keen

photographer influenced by her elder brother Noel (dec) at an early age. A self

taught artist, initially having tuition by Tim Allen & Peter Rosson (dec) at Bondi

Art School.

Her influences are the Impressionists, Fauves and John Russell our great

Australian Impressionist.

She’s a plein air painter, oils are her preferred medium and also enjoys mixed

media. She applies colour intuitively, motifs can be any colour to enhance the

painting. She has travelled around Australia twice, visiting every state painting

landscapes and old trucks, a tribute to their final resting place and celebrating

their contribution to building the nation. These works also highlight the

struggles of the farmers dealing with our changing climate.

Kathleen has exhibited in multiple group exhibitions, winning the Waverley Art

Prize 2008, the Friends Annual Campbelltown Arts Centre 2021 plus many

awards in painting and photography at the Sydney Royal Easter Show staying

true to her country roots. Her solo exhibition was in 2010 Them Wheels Don’t

Roll, Washhouse Gallery, Rozelle.

to cope whatever life throws at us.
